What Is Better Than Epoxy for Floors?

There is no single floor that beats epoxy for every job. The best alternative depends on how you use the space: polished concrete for a natural, low-maintenance look, polyaspartic for faster curing and UV stability, and grind & seal for budget and character. For most Melbourne homes and businesses, one of these will suit better than standard epoxy.

Polished Concrete for a Natural, Low-Maintenance Finish

If you want a hard-wearing floor with almost no ongoing upkeep, concrete polishing is often a better choice than epoxy. It uses your existing slab, so there is no coating to peel or chip. The finish is scratch-resistant, easy to clean and keeps a natural stone-like look that suits warehouses, showrooms and modern homes across Victoria.

The trade-off is that colour and pattern options are more limited than a coating, and the slab needs to be in reasonable condition.

Polyaspartic for Speed and Sunlight

Polyaspartic (and hybrid systems) cure far faster than traditional epoxy, often letting you walk on the floor the same day. It is also more UV-stable, so it will not yellow in areas with direct sunlight, such as garages with open doors or alfresco zones. In Melbourne's variable climate this durability is a real advantage. The main downside is a higher cost per square metre.

Grind & Seal for Budget and Character

If you like exposed aggregate or a rustic concrete look on a smaller budget, grind and seal is a strong middle ground. It grinds the surface, then applies a protective sealer. It costs less than full polishing or premium coatings and lets some slab character show through.

So Which Should You Choose?

  • Natural look, minimal upkeep: polished concrete
  • Fast cure and UV areas: polyaspartic
  • Tight budget or rustic feel: grind & seal
  • Colour, flake and chemical resistance: a quality plain epoxy floor or epoxy flake flooring
